Chapter 1 opens with an anecdote about Mary Pipher’s cousin Polly, who began her life as a vivacious tomboy but who, through social pressure, was transformed into a shadow of her former self. Once Polly enters adolescence, however, other children begin teasing her about her tomboyish ways and insist that she be more ladylike. The book became iconic and helped to reframe the national conversation about what author Mary Pipher called a girl-poisoning culture surrounding adolescents.

A tomboy, Polly dances, plays sports with the neighborhood boys, and rides horses.
